| Alcohol-Drug Education Service is a registered
Canadian non-profit society dedicated to alcohol and
drug prevention education since 1952. As a leading
voice in prevention throughout British Columbia,
Alcohol-Drug Education Service provides prevention
programs for elementary and secondary schools,
post-secondary students, parents, ethnic groups,
teachers, sports and recreation organizations,
school liaison officers, police, nurses, social
workers, and other professionals. Prevention
education provides children with the tools they need
to make informed choices; and, ideally this
education begins when they are young, is sustained
over time, and is reinforced at school, at home, and
in the community.
Mission
To promote healthy lifestyles by preventing and
or reducing the problem use of alcohol and other
drugs through education and advocacy.
School and Community Prevention
The Making Decisions series is a leading
province-wide education initiative to combat drug
and alcohol abuse, and encourage social
responsibility. Currently, the series includes
grades 4 to 9 and is the only substance abuse
prevention program designed to meet BC Ministry of
Education learning outcomes.
Community Education
Reaching the community is a critical part of
prevention and, through public forums and
educational workshops; A-DES continues to provide
effective prevention education to communities across
the province.
Parents as Preventors™ workshops help parents
understand the scope and nature of alcohol and other
drug use by teens and pre-teens in order to avoid
problems before they start.
Professionals as Preventors™ workshops are for
teachers, counselors, prevention workers, community
health workers, police and other professionals who
teach substance abuse prevention to children and
youth.
Tobacco Free Sports campaign encourages sporting
associations and athletes to adopt Tobacco Free
Sports policies and programs in their communities:

Advocacy
Communicating the message of prevention is an
ongoing process and an important one. A-DES has been
actively advocating for sound policy for many
decades and will continue to do so, through media,
public forums, our new website and other venues,
with the goal of developing a social awareness aimed
at creating new social norms in which drug use is
unacceptable.
